Finding Jobs through Social Media

I recently found an article that discussed how people searching for jobs can find them easily through a social media tool such as a company’s Facebook or Twitter account. Even though this seems like an easy way to find jobs, not many people are using these resources. Which seems counteractive, because if you were searching for a social media job, shouldn’t you follow the company on social media? It would then give you access to their current strategy and give you (as an interviewee) suggestions on how to better the company’s image.

I can understand why someone would avoid following a company; it gives the company a direct link to you, which may not be the best representation of yourself. However, you need to consider the possible benefits and the chance that a company will probably list a social media job on these sites before they post it anywhere else. So it would be beneficial for anyone searching for a job to go directly to the source.

  1. Good post. I follow @AustinJoblist on Twitter and they post hundreds of job openings each day. I didn't realize until a few months ago just how important social media can be for finding jobs. I wonder how many companies actually look at their followers. For the most part, it seems like big organizations don't follow back many of their followers. But I definitely see what you are saying about misrepresenting yourself. Sometimes, I'm afraid that my Twitter gives people the worst representation of myself because I complain on it a lot haha. Needless to say, if you are looking for a job (especially as a COMM major) social media is a great outlet.

  2. Using social media to list job openings is a great idea. I never thought to look for jobs that way but now that I know this I will start using social media to find job openings the next time I’m in need of a job (which will be pretty soon!). If a social media company is not using social media to list job openings within their own company, I completely agree with you that it is very strange and they should begin doing so immediately. Especially if other companies are starting to list job openings more and more, it will make that particular company look bad!

  3. With how the economy is right now. It's always good to seek every avenue available. I too have worried about using Twitter for that reason. With everything going digital it's easy to see why finding a potential job/internship is becoming more common.
